80-Year-Old Man Cited in Wrong-Way Crash on Massachusetts Turnpike

80-year old driver treated for minor injuries

An 80-year-old driver has been cited after a wrong-way crash Monday afternoon on the Massachusetts Turnpike.

Massachusetts State Police say the Westwood man in a Cadillac was heading west on the eastbound side of the highway when he crossed over at the Allston-Brighton tolls at exit 19. The man then traveled 3 miles in the wrong direction before he struck a median barrier at exit 17.

Police said three vehicles crashed while trying to avoid the wrong-way driver.

Witnesses said the man was going about 50 mph, forcing other drivers to swerve around him. Mike Endicott told necn he was coming home from work when he spotted the wrong-way driver and almost crashed into him.

"Out of no where I just saw him coming at me and I tried to react as fast as I could," Endicott said. "I almost hit the car next to me."

The man, from Westwood, was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Boston with minor injuries. The other drivers who crashed were not hurt.

The driver, who is not being identified, is being issued citations for negligent operation, wrong way operation and a marked lanes violation.
