Red Sox: David Ortiz Released From Hospital

Ortiz, 43, was shot in the back in his native Dominican Republic on June 9

Red Sox legend David Ortiz has been released from the hospital, according to the team.

Ortiz was released Friday. He will reportedly continue his rehab at home and be monitored by nurses and his personal doctor.

Ortiz, 43, was shot in the back in his native Dominican Republic on June 9. After undergoing emergency surgery in the D.R., Ortiz was flown to Boston to receive further care at Mass General Hospital.

"He used to always come over," said Joseph Copolla, who has served Ortiz sandwiches for years. "He’s a real gentleman."

Authorities in the Dominican Republic have said Ortiz was not the intended target of the hitman who shot him in a DR nightclub. Instead, they say it was Sixto David Fernandez, who was sitting next to Ortiz and wearing a similar shirt.
