A Delta flight from New York City to Seattle had to make a stop in Billings, Montana, after the plane's toilets filled up and passengers couldn't hold it any longer.
The Billings Gazette reports the direct flight diverted hundreds of miles south on Saturday to make the emergency bathroom stop.
Just off the trail they were hiking in Bushnell Falls, the Carusone family noticed a near-perfect circle of ice rotating in the water.
They had no internet access at the time, so they didn't find out until later that the ice disk was actually a very rare natural occurrence.
The Carusones decided to spend Thanksgiving in in the Adirondacks, even hiking miles with a turkey. Just off the trail they were hiking in Bushnell Falls, the family noticed a near-perfect circle of ice rotating in the water.
They had no internet access at the time, so they didn't find out until later that the ice circle was actually a very rare natural occurrence. "It was amazing...honestly the best day," Laura Carusone said.
According to the Physical Review E Journal, conditions must be very precise in order for one of these circles to form.
The ice disks occur as a result of changing water temperatures. "I love the science of it," Carusone said. "And I love how uniquely random it is. All the right things had to be in place. And I was there."
The family described seeing the ice circle as a magical experience. "I'm so pleased that our kids got to see it knowing how special it was," Carusone said. "I feel blessed to be a witness to nature."
Delta says that upon landing in Billings, the plane had to taxi to a cargo area because a gate was not available. Delta says ground crews rolled a stairway to the airplane so passengers could "disembark to find relief of built-up pressures."
