What to Know

  • FRIDAY: Mixed showers give way to afternoon clearing, windy through early afternoon. Highs in the 30s, 40s south.
  • SATURDAY: Fair, melting. Highs in the 40s.
  • SUNDAY: Chilly with a few sprinkles and flurries. Highs near 40.

It is a rough start Friday morning with heavy rain and wintry mix ending quickly in southern New England, but lasting much of the day in Maine.

A gusty east wind, gusting 40 to 50 mph at times, south over Cape Cod, will shift and ease by noon if not sooner. Rainfall over 1 inch in parts of Southern New England is heaviest from Boston's south with localized flash flooding.

On the cold side, from the high terrain of Western Massachusetts, into parts of north-central Massachusetts, the Merrimack Valley, and Southern New Hampshire, we have heavy and wet snow with sleet. These conditions are prompting some freeze as well as many school cancellations and delays.

Same for farther north, in much of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. All snow continues through midday. That’s where snow totals will be highest, reaching 6-to-9-inches.

By afternoon, the storm pulls away and we’ll see some peeks of sun and much less wind. This weekend looks pretty good -- milder, in the 30s and 40s, with more sunshine.

Next week, overall, looks fine for travel, but there will be a few light rain or snow showers on Monday and again Wednesday. Another batch of Canadian air work in with near record cold again mid-week, but as of now to big storms into Thanksgiving, we see it right now anyway.
