Snow and slush will give way to ice and hazardous driving conditions for much of New England.
Roadways in northern New England stretching down to Rhode Island are expected to be hit by a flash freeze that will create hazardous travel conditions for most of Christmas day and night.
Temperatures throughout New England are expected to fall from the 30s into the mid and upper-20s. Rain in affected areas will change to snow and wet roads and surfaces will quickly freeze, reports the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency.
NBC Boston's Katelyn Flint was in Worcester, Massachusetts early Monday morning, where main roads were snow-covered and back streets completely covered with snow.
"I hope everybody's where they're supposed to be already," said one resident still on the roads.
A speed restriction of 40 mph is in effect on the Mass Pike from Exit 11 to the New York border. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation said that about 1,000 crews are currently working to clear the streets, and they are advising people to avoid the roads at this time.
