Newbury Man Lights Himself on Fire at Gas Station, Hospitalized With Life-Threatening Injuries

Newbury Police responded to the Ampet Service Station at 34 High Road around 4:12 p.m. Saturday after a man doused himself in gasoline and lit himself on fire.

A man suffered life-threatening injuries after he doused himself in gasoline and lit himself on fire at the gas station where he worked in Newbury, Massachusetts. 

Newbury Police responded to the Ampet Service Station at 34 High Road around 4:12 p.m. Saturday.

According to the Essex County District Attorney, the victim ran away as the officer attempted to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher. The officer eventually tackled the man to ground and extinguished the flames. 

The victim, who has not been identified, was transported to Ana Jacques Hospital and then airlifted to a Boston hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The responding police officer was also transported to Ana Jacques Hospital as a precaution.

It's not immediately clear why the man lit himself on fire.
