State to Waive Tax Penalties for Residents After Blasts

Gas company is trying to meet November deadline.

Residents trying to recover from the gas explosions and fires that rocked the Merrimack Valley more than a week ago have one fewer thing to worry about.

The Massachusetts Department of Revenue says it will give a break to taxpayers in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover who may have trouble meeting tax payment deadlines because of the disaster.

The agency says it will waive any penalties associated with payments or tax filings that were due between Sept. 12 and Oct. 1.

Revenue officials say they will decide after 30 days whether to extend the grace period.

Any taxpayer who was affected by the blasts and receives notice of a penalty is advised to contact the agency as soon as possible.
