After three officers were murdered by career criminals, pressure is mounting, including from national groups, for change to how Massachusetts evaluates criminals for release.
A Massachusetts police department is dedicating its annual charity run in memory of an officer who was killed this month in the line of duty.
Yarmouth police Officer Sean Gannon was shot and killed April 12 while he and other officers were serving an arrest warrant at a home in Barnstable.
The department says this year's 5K race, scheduled for May 20, will be run in his honor.
A message on the race's website reads, "We run together to remember the hero we have lost but who lives forever in our hearts."
Gannon, an 8-year veteran of the department, was laid to rest on April 18. His police dog, Nero, was also shot, but underwent surgery and is recovering.
The man accused of killing Gannon, 29-year-old Thomas Latanowich, was ordered to be held without bail when he faced a judge on a murder charge and one count of mistreating a police dog.
