Worcester, Mass. Crash Witness Says Mom Acted Like Nothing Happened

(NECN: Kristen Carosa) - A mother is behind bars, held on bail, charged with fleeing a hit and run, speeding into parked cars and killing her 3-year-old son. Also in her car were her two other sons.

“It’s burnt in my memory right now, it's a bad day,” said John Krikorian, president of Etre’s Auto Body.

He can't shake the image of children being pulled from a car following a serious crash. It happened just outside his business on Franklin Street Monday night.

Police say 27-year-old Christina Castro lost control and crashed this car with her three young children inside. Her youngest, Jayden Figueroa, just three years old, died shortly after the crash.

“Two children were removed from the vehicle, all three boys were taken to the hospital, shortly after their arrival the 3-year-old son succumbed to his injuries,” said Sgt. Kerry Hazelhurst of the Worcester Police Department.

“If something happened to my kids, I don't know what I would do,” Krikorian said. “She was just walking around like nothing happened.”

Castro pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges including motor vehicle homicide. Police say Castro was speeding away from another accident just minutes before this crash that killed her son.

“It answers a lot of questions about why she was travelling at such a high rate of speed,” Sgt. Hazelhurst said.

Castro is being held on $50,000 bail.

Police say Castro's 7-year-old son is in critical condition; her 5-year-old son suffered minor injuries.

“No one was restrained, no seat belts were used, the 3-year-old should have been restrained, there was only a booster seat in the vehicle,” said Sgt. Hazelhurst.

Krikorian said the crash totaled two cars on his lot and damaged one of his tow trucks. He said Castro was going over 60 miles an hour, way over the posted speed limit.

Police say video surveillance from his shop is being used in the investigation.

“In our video, there was no other cars that ran her off the road, there was no one behind her or coming up the street, it was only her.”
