Rita DeRosby, mother of Maine first lady Ann LePage, has died at age 77.
DeRosby, who suffered for two decades from scleroderma, a disease of the skin and connective tissues, spent much of her last years with her daughter and son-in-law, Gov. Paul LePage, in the Blaine House.
Her family described her as "a medical miracle" who beat the odds for years. They said she spent 20 years participating in studies seeking a cure for scleroderma before her death Sunday in an Augusta hospital, where her family was at her bedside.
Sen. Susan Collins said she was "always able to find the humor in any situation, even as she dealt with a difficult, long-term illness." A celebration of life will be held Friday at Faith Evangelical Free Church in Waterville.
