Video obtained by NBC New York shows the moment a man stole an SUV in broad daylight in a Brooklyn street — likely not knowing there was a child inside.
The surveillance video from across the street shows the boy's uncle pull up along Avenue L in Canarsie and double park across the street from a plumbing store around 1:15 p.m. Monday. He not only left the white Acura MDX unlocked and running, but with the keys inside as well.
Shortly after, police believe a man seen walking along the street crossed over, opened the driver's side door and took off. It's possible he didn't realize there was a child in the back seat until he already began his joyride, and then ditched the car about two miles from where he picked it up.
Luckily, the 6-year-old boy was not harmed and was found safe later in the day. He was brought to the hospital to be checked out, and was back with his family by nightfall.
The uncle who was driving the car told reporters he was thankful to police for their efforts, and was looking forward to seeing his nephew again.
Police were still searching for the man who took the car and then fled. An investigation is ongoing.
