McConnell on Afghan war: Republicans will make decisions for themselves

(NECN: Washington) – As he reviews the war effort in Afghanistan, President Barack Obama has been meeting at the White House today with leaders in the House and Senate from both parties. The president is expected to take several more weeks before deciding on a new strategy for the war. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said that both Democrats and Republicans told the president, basically, “Whatever decision you make, we’ll support it.” The comment came after Senate and House leaders of both parties met with Obama at the White House to discuss his war review. Top Senate Republican Mitch McConnell put it differently. In his words: “I think Republicans will be able to make the decisions for themselves.” Senator John McCain was also at the meeting. “It’s pretty clear that time is not on our side,” said McCain. “We need to act with deliberate haste.” Information from the Associated Press is included in this report.
