Terror suspect Zazi skips FBI interrogation; al-Qaeda connection?

(NECN/ABC: Denver, Colo.) – While officials insisted there was no immediate threat, New York City Police were being particularly vigilant as new information surfaced in the alleged terror plot. After being questioned for three days, Najibullah Zazi has reportedly admitted ties to al-Qaeda and his lawyer canceled a fourth scheduled day of interrogation at the Denver FBI office. Zazi could now be an intelligence windfall on al-Qaeda. While officials said they do not know the target of the alleged plot, Zazi’s computer had video of New York’s Grand Central Station, and showed he researched sports stadiums and other public gathering places. One text message reading, “the wedding cake is ready”, could have been code for an imminent attack, according to police. The subway system and its miles of tunnels is always a concern. Found on Zazi’s computer was the recipe for a home made bomb similar to the explosives used in the London subway attacks of 2005. Suicide bombers used backpacks to carry the explosives in that attack. Fourteen new backpacks were found in police raid’s Monday in New York. A truck bomb might also have been considered. According to New York’s Daily News, seven Afghan men with ties to Zazi failed in an attempt to rent a large U-Haul truck last week, just before he arrived in the city. While interrogators hope to get a lot more information from Zazi, police in New York are acting on what they already have. ABC’s Deirdre Bryant reports.
