USS New York leaves Louisiana for NYC

(NECN/WVUE) – The USS New York began its journey today to New York City for a commissioning ceremony scheduled for November 7, 2009. The USS New York departed from Avondale, Louisiana at 7 a.m. and traveled down the Mississippi River through downtown News Orleans. Spectators lined the levees waving flags that were handed out by representatives from Northrop Grumman Company, the company who built the ship. The 800-passenger ship was built in Avondale Louisiana and used eight tons of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center Towers after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The ship was built to honor the victims of 9/11.
