Woman helped from Georgia floodwaters

(NECN/WAGA) – The severe weather system that dropped three to 12 inches of rain overnight in and around Atlanta, Georgia, is turning deadly. At least two drivers died when their vehicles ended up in quick-flowing waters with no escape route. Heavy rains and flash floods have proved to be a nightmare for homeowners, as well as commuters. In DeKalb County, to the east, there have been mud slides, and the water in towns like Lilburn is causing cars to float away with or without their owners. But the most interesting rescue this morning began with a Gwinnett County resident who called for help. Police were not successful and actually got trapped. It took a swift water rescue squad to eventually get the homeowners as well as the rescuers rescued. Forecasters have revised earlier predictions from this morning and say the weather systems will remain strong until at least Tuesday (09/22) evening. In suburban Douglas County, Georgia this morning another swift water rescue team had to pull a family from their home after water overtook all escape routes to higher ground and drier land. All weekend long heavy rainfall caused rivers and creeks to overflow their banks. At least 25 Atlanta residents had to be retrieved from their flooded out apartment buildings as the severe weather pushed through.
