Obama welcomes Penguins, Stanley Cup to White House

(NECN: Washington, DC) – President Barack Obama welcomed the Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins to the White House Thursday evening. The Penguins presented Obama with a Penguins jersey, with Obama and #44 on the back. Introducing the Penguins, Obama said, “I have to say you all look pretty good without your playoff beards.” The Penguins won their first Stanley Cup since 1992, rallying from a 3-2 series deficit to defeat the reigning champion Detroit Red Wings in the finals. The Penguins became the first team since 1971 to win a finals Game 7 on the road. Sidney Crosby at 21 became the youngest captain to ever win the Stanley Cup. Obama said of the young captain, “Sidney must be really fast, cause there’s some big hockey players, and he’s not one of them.” Obama held the Stanley Cup and posed for some pictures with the team.
