(NECN: Washington) - "The last month has been the hardest time of my life, and the hardest time of my family's life," says astronaut Capt. Mark Kelly.
Speaking to the National Prayer Breakfast, the husband of Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, asked why his wife was shot in the head.
"Maybe it was fate. I hadn't been a big believer in fate until recently. I thought the world just spins and the clock just spins," says Kelly.
"I can only hope that maybe it's possible that this is just one small part of a larger plan," says Kelly. "Maybe something good can come from all this."
"You don't need a church, a temple or a mosque to pray. You don’t even need a building or walls. You pray where you are," says Kelly.
Kelly also went on to quote some special prayers delivered by his wife's rabbi, Stephanie Aaron.
Giffords is Arizona's first Jewish Congresswoman.
Kelly didn't go into details about his wife's recuperation from being shot in the head at a Tucson shopping center less than a month ago. But he did say that, "Every day, she gets a little better." And he says doctors and neurosurgeons have told him "that's a great sign, the slope of that curve is very important."
