(NECN) - As we all are certainly aware of, summer is on in a big way and that means kids are largely free to do as they please until September rolls around.
But, there are ways for them to stay busy and give back in the process.
Tim Garvin, president and CEO of United Way of central Massachusetts, and Alexandra Noonan, the summer youth volunteer intern and Holy Cross student, join us to discuss the importance of volunteering.
“United Way is all over the United States. We see summer as the learning season. It’s a chance to be out of school but really to practice some of the skills you’ve learned but also look for discovery and try other things,” says Garvin. “What a great thing if you can get a job but we understand the economy is stressed so we’ve created this program that will allow teens to really do real work, make a difference, build their resume, have a great summer and meet other kids, and know at the end of every day they have made a difference.”
Noonan sees United Way as a great opportunity for kids to get out there and give back to the community.
She discusses her first project, which included planting 1500 potatoes in two hours.
