(NECN/WHAG) - A new dash cam video illustrates how dangerous highways can become when motorists fail to obey a law known as "the move over law."

Maryland State Police released this dash cam video of a traffic accident that seriously injured trooper David Avila during a routine traffic stop along I-70 in June.

Trooper Avila was struck by a tractor trailer driving to close to the shoulder that slammed into his patrol car.

The new law requires drivers to literally move over or slow down when they see first responders along the side of the road.

Trooper Avila is recovering from the accident with several serious injuries. Doctors say they aren't sure Avila will be able to move his right arm again or return to work.
