(NECN) - Boston Mayor Tom Menino took part in a Christmas tradition for the final time as mayor Tuesday - one that holds a special place in his heart.

Every Christmas Eve, Mayor Menino goes for a holiday stroll in the city, and visits kids on Bowdoin Street in the city's Dorchester neighborhood - a neighborhood that has had a tough reputation in the past.

He met with people in local businesses and handed out gifts to the children.

"I started this 20 years ago when I first became mayor," he said. "They have a lot of issues up here. I've come every year since. It's important I continue to work with this community. It's a great, strong community."

A bench was also dedicated to the mayor.

People in the Dorchester say he will always have a place in the community.
