(NECN/WOFL: Orange County, Fla.) - A Florida man charged with in Orange County for a shooting spree in a downtown Orlando high-rise that left one person dead appeared in court Saturday morning.
After 40-year-old Jason Rodriguez made a court appearance, the suspect's mother made a brief statement to reporters.
Ana Lopez-Rodriguez and her son's defense attorney, Bob Wesley spoke to the media outside the Orange County Jail.
"I'm so sorry for everything that has happened; sorry for the families involved, and for my own son," Ana Lopez-Rodriguez said. "I'm really, really sorry, and this is very hurtful."
Police say Rodriguez went into his former employers' office and began firing a weapon, killing one person and injuring several others.
According to authorities, Rodriguez told detectives he blamed the firm for recent trouble he had receiving unemployment benefits.
Police arrested Rodriguez at his mother's suburban Orlando home hours after he apparently entered an eighth floor office of the Reynolds, Smith and Hills traffic engineering company.
