Cutting to fit in

(NECN/ABC) - Most people know what it means to be "goth" -- they associate it with people wearing dark clothes, dying their hair black, and wearing dramatic makeup, but kids and teenagers have been taking "goth" to a whole new level for quite some time.

Not only is this "lifestyle" going on around the country, but it's going on in schools and it can be very dangerous.

"There's a lot of girls at school that try to talk you into stuff and one of them is EMO."

"They, like, lure you into it and they say, oh, it doesn't hurt and make it sound like it takes away the pain."

This 11-year-old girl, almost 12, is a sixth grader at Erwin Middle School. She doesn't want to be identified, because she says, she gave into peer pressure and gave EMO a try.

"I took an eraser and did it repeatedly until it did that"

Some kids, who call themselves EMO, which is short for emotional, practice self-mutilation, mostly, they cut themselves.

This girl's parents were quick to notice.

For many kids and teens, it's a lifestyle. For this girl, it was a huge mistake. She hopes her coming forward will help bring attention to a problem she wishes would just go away.
