| June 27, 2008 Dolphins dance their way down NJ river

(NECN/ABC: Sea Bright, NJ) - People just can't get enough of these dolphins that have become regulars here, but the longer they stay, the more endangered they become. A dozen dolphins, including three calves, have been dancing their way up and down this river along the Jersey shore, attracting thousands of fans.
For three weeks the pod has been trapped between two rivers after taking a wrong turn from the Atlantic, but every time they reach the bridge - just moments from the ocean and freedom - they turn around and head back down the river, remaining trapped.
Experts say the traffic and construction the bridge gives off strong vibrations in the water, which may contribute to their anxiety, but the biggest concern is yet to come. The race is on to get these dolphins back into the ocean before the July 4th holiday, because in just a few days thousands of boats will descend on this river.
Residents of Sea Bright say they just hope this pod, that has become like family to them, will find their way home in time. And marine experts are supposed to get started on their work this morning to rescue these animals. One way they could do it is by sending negative vibrations into the water that simulate a predator, and hopefully will scare the dolphins back into the ocean.
