| August 27, 2008 Rescued chimps experience life for the first time
|
(NECN/KOMO) - The moment the door to the outside world slid open, 2 of the 7 chimps bolted out. Without hesitation, they stepped onto something they've never
felt -- the earth, real dirt.
They ran circles, quickly exploring each corner of their outdoor playground, it seemed as if they touched everything.
For Keith LaChappelle this is a dream realized. Empowered by an article he read about chimps in captivity, Keith decided to build this chimpanzee sanctuary in Seattle, Washington. It opened in June. Without it, he couldn't rescue chimps - couldn't give them their dignity. All 7 chimps were rescued from a medical research lab.
Since moving to the sanctuary, Jamie stopped pulling her hair out.
Keith says, They don't belong in captivity.
Keith says, as far as we know, their feet have never touched the earth -- it has always been concrete or bars.
In a matter of five minutes all 7 chimps were outside and happy.
Burrito was a little nervous, you can tell by his stance - and his hair standing on end, but in time they all seemed to make themselves at home.
