| November 3, 2009 Afghanistan's Karzai promises to rid corruption

(NECN/ABC) - One day after slipping in to a second term, when his rival pulled out of the race, Afghanistan's president is promising change for the better.
Yesterday, President Barack Obama urged Hamid Karzai to root out widespread corruption that has plauged his regime. Today, Karzai said he will press for reform.
Under serious pressure from the international community, Karzai promised today to clean up the corruption that has come to define his government.
Karzai was declared the winner by default Monday in Afghanistan's presidential election when Dr. Abdullah Abdullah dropped out of the scheduled November 7 runoff. The original election had been tainted by fraud, and Abdullah believed the runoff would suffer the same fate.
