Woman charged with stealing $225,000 from Boy Scouts


(NECN: Kenneth Craig, Worcester, Mass.) - In Worcester Superior Court Monday morning, Forty-four year old Cheryl Allen of Millbury answering to charges alleging she stole over a quarter million dollars from the Boy Scouts of America.

Allen's arraignment came after a Worcester county grand jury indicted her on three counts of larceny over $250 by common scheme and one count of larceny over $250.

Today -- Allen pleaded not guilty to all four counts.

According to the Mohegan Council in Worcester-- which oversees the central Mass Boy Scout chapter -- Allen was a bookkeeper for a third party accounting firm.

They say she did not have check-signing authority.

From late December 2006 through early 2009 -- prosecutors allege Allen wrote and forged checks to another business with which she was affiliated and had access to its accounts.

In was during that time -- Allen is alleged to have stolen a total of $227,119.

In a statement... Mohegan Council Scout Executive Jay Garee said: "The fraud was carefully planned and conducted and could not be readily identified by council management or by an independent audit firm. "

He went on to say that a lengthy investigation was conducted by the Worcester Police and District Attorney's office.

Following her arraignment -- Allen had little to say to reporters.

Allen was released on personal recognizance -- ordered not to leave the state -- and must check in with probation

officers twice a week.

She is due back in court on November 16th.
