Advocate for Bottle Bill: Expansion Would Increase Recycling Rates

An expansion of the Bay State's bottle bill could land on the November ballot.

The expansion would include bottled water, sports drinks and other non-carbonated beverages.

An advocate for the expansion of that bottle bill, Commissioner of Massachusetts Environmental Protection David W. Cash, joined NECN for more on the subject.

Cash said there are three big benefits to expanding the bill. He said the first is that about 40 percent of bottles in the state now are non-deposit and are recycled at a much lower rate since they do not have a deposit.

He said that a better bottle bill will help to keep litter out of beaches, stadiums and other places where people are drinking from bottles.
