Police Officer Charged with 2nd OUI

Kevin Weafer was allegedly carrying his police issued firearm when he was arrested

A police officer in Beverly, Massachusetts, has been placed on administrative leave after he was arrested for drunken driving over the Labor Day weekend.

Kevin Weafer, 52, of Beverly, pleaded not guilty on Monday in Newburyport District Court to operating under the influence, second offense; carrying a firearm while intoxicated; and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle. Bail was set at $1,000 and he was ordered not to consume drugs and alcohol and to submit to random screenings.

Weafer was arrested on Sunday at Pipestave Hill Park in Newbury after police received a report of a possibly intoxicated man looking for his dog. Police said Weafer was carrying his Beverly Police Department issued firearm, and there was a half-empty bottle of vodka in his motor vehicle.

Beverly Police placed him on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation. He is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 5 for a pre-trial hearing.
