‘Craigslist Killer' Evidence Revealed

(NECN: Alysha Palumbo - Boston) -"It was a brutal murder committed during an armed robbery gone bad," said Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley.

It's the case investigators never got the chance to present in court.

The accused Craigslist killer - 22-year-old Boston University medical student Philip Markoff had been arrested and charged with the murder of Julissa Brisman and the attack and robbery of another woman - both of whom he'd met in the exotic services section of Craigslist.

Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said, "I realized that we were dealing with someone that murdered without hesitation, and would not stop doing what he was doing until we stopped him."

Police had the evidence - the trackfones Markoff allegedly used to schedule meetings with his victims, the cable ties he allegedly wrapped around his victims' wrists, the Gray's Anatomy book he carved out, the alleged murder weapon that had been hidden inside, and the shoes he was wearing the day he was arrested.

Conley said, "He had Julissa Brisman's blood on him literally when we took him into custody and charged him with her murder."

But then Markoff committed suicide in prison - keeping Brisman's family from getting justice and prosecutors from letting the world know what they believed Markoff had done.

"In this case the evidence of his guilt wasn't just sufficient for a conviction, it was and remains overwhelmingly absolute and incontrovertible," said the district attorney.

Now two years after the Craigslist crime spree, investigators are releasing the more than three thousand documents, photos, videos, and audio recordings that make up the case file.

But despite all this evidence there are some things we may never know - like why a bright, young man on his way to becoming a doctor, engaged to be married would allegedly turn to Craigslist to rob and kill women.

D.A. Conley, "There apparently was a very dark and sinister side to Philip Markoff that he took to the grave with him."
