Brazen Robbery of Musto Jewelers Is Part of Alarming Trend

(NECN: Scot Yount, Woburn, MA) – New details to the jewelry heist Tuesday that turned into a gun fight in Woburn, Massachusetts, that sent a police officer to the hospital.

Jewelry stores across the area are on high alert.

Woburn police are still looking for at least two, maybe three suspects, in a jewelry store robbery Tuesday that ended with an officer shot several times, and one suspect shot and captured by police.

The brazen robbery of Musto Jewelers is part of an alarming trend. That stunning rise in the price of gold is resulting in an uptick in robberies. On Saturday, this store was robbed in Natick by five adults who had three children with them, one of them a baby.

“They were hitting banks for a while, now they are trying jewelry stores,” said Mark Rogozinski who owns Marquis Jewelers.

The price of gold has nearly doubled from just two years ago. At Marquis Jewelers in Newton, Mark Rogozinski buys gold and says the state of the economy has kept him very busy.

“Unbelievable, some days where I have ten or twelve people waiting in line at one time,” said Rogozinski who says he keeps in touch with police on a regular basis.

“Crime we didn’t see like this in 2000, 2005, 2006 you didn’t hear about any robberies,” said Rogozinski.

Police are looking for three suspects, possibly two men and a woman but have not released descriptions of the people they are looking for, or any surveillance pictures.

DeNapoli was badly injured but is expected to survive. He was listed in good condition at Lahey Clinic.
