Defense Attorney: Jared Remy Is ‘an Emotional Mess'

(NECN/AP: Ally Donnelly) - The son of Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy has pleaded not guilty in the stabbing death of his girlfriend.

Jared Remy was held without bail at his arraignment Tuesday in Woburn, Mass., on murder and assault charges. The 35-year-old Remy has pleaded not guilty in the stabbing death of Jennifer Martel.

Prosecutors say Remy stabbed Martel at their Waltham apartment on Aug. 15. Authorities say he was covered in blood when they arrested him at the scene. They say it happened in front of their 5-year-old daughter.

The case had quite a bit of controversy surrounding it, as the alleged attack came a day after Remy was released from custody after being accused of assaulting Martel.

It was a quick hearing Tuesday because Remy’s defense attorney argued against the state reading a statement of the facts, which would have provided many more details on that night.

Defense Attorney Ed Ryan calls the statement inflammatory fodder for the media and he wants to keep the focus on his client.

Ryan called Remy “quite frankly, an emotional mess.” He went on to say his mental state is difficult and this is a very difficult and tragic case.

Both the state and the Martel family declined to talk to the media.

When asked why the Remy family was not in court Tuesday, Ryan said Jerry Remy and his wife had very good reasons for not being there and he’s going to leave it at that.

In a jailhouse interview with the Boston Herald, Jared Remy denied killing Martel and said he still loves her.

Asked what kind of defense he would prepare, Ed Ryan would not go into specifics. He would only say every option is on the table at this point.

Remy is due back in court on October 15 to talk about the reading of the statement issue and then he is back on October 28 for a dangerousness hearing.

Both sets of grandparents have petitioned for custody of Remy and Martel’s 5-year-old daughter, but she remains in state custody.
