Review: Cafe Adulis

(TV Diner) - In the heart of the Yale district in downtown New Haven, you can find an African restaurant known as Caffe Adulis. Located directly across from the Shubert Theatre, Caffe Adulis maintains a casual yet refined vibe, which is largely embraced by a hip, younger crowd, many probably students and certainly some cozy couples. The menu features stews simmered with berbere, a common hot pepper spice, but also some Mediterranean choices and even a pasta dish or two.

First we tried the Menche Tabish. This lean, tender steak wrapped with injera, or sourdough crepe, had a faint tomato and onion curry flavor. We wished it had a touch more flavor. Next up was the Seared Tuna. Strips of tuna were atop an interesting medley of arugula, fava beans, tomato and balsamic vinegar dressing. Unfortunately, the tuna was just a touch over cooked. The Shrimp Barka was both sizeable and delicious. Served in a traditional style, the sweet cream of the sauce was soaked up by the tangy injera. The Tshebhe Begle, aka lamb stew served with injera, was rich and tasty. The berbere, hot pepper spice, simmered in a tomato base, was interesting without being infernal. The Chocolate Souffle was decadent. Deep, dark chocolate in just the right proportion for sharing, we loved it! The Pistachio Gelato was cool and refreshing, rich and creamy- no complaints there. Service was very good at Caffe Adulis. Our waitress was courteous, friendly and knowledgeable about menu items. Apps averaged $8, entrees $15-20 and desserts around $6. We found Caffe Adulis to be a very good value for exotic, high quality food in an upscale environment. Overall, Caffe Adulis earned the Gold Plate. They can be reached at 203-777-5081 and are located at 228 College Street in New Haven. They have a great wine and drink list, street parking is available, and there are plenty of local hotspots if you want to party after, so for a great time on the weekend or during the week, check out Caffe Adulis!
