Review: East Bay Grille

Review: East Bay Grille (TV Diner) - It's been nearly a decade since Tim Colton and Paul Barbato teamed up to transform the former downtown Plymouth institution known as McGrath's into the East Bay Grille, a massive restaurant that has become popular with day-trippers and natives alike for its comfortable, yet elegant nautical-themed atmosphere, cozy waterfront seating and a predominantly seafood and steak menu.

We begin with the mediocre stuffed mushrooms. The four large caps stuffed with a mild crab meat dressing were rubbery and on the oily side. But a big and beautiful spinach walnut salad dressed up with bacon, roasted peppers, apples and gorgonzola was a rock solid first course. On to a scrod filet, baked with wine, butter and melt-in-your-mouth bread crumbs. We were hooked by this catch of the day from first to last bite. The Town Wharf sirloin topped with caramelized onions, bleu cheese and a cabernet au jus was tender, savory and ample in size. Paired with mashed potatoes and spinach, this was one plate of high-end comfort food. Desserts at the East Bay Grille are huge, but that didn't stop us from sampling two. The congo bongo ice cream sandwich placed vanilla ice cream between two massive layers of a too dense and flavorless blonde brownie. But we gave thanks for a heavenly apple turnover coupled with ice cream and whipped cream. The nicely spiced fruit resting in buttery pastry was a taste of autumn. Our server was amiable and adept, but we did feel slightly on the rushed side with dishes arriving at the table in quick succession. Prices at East Bay Grille are moderate with appetizers, salads and raw bar selections averaging $10; entrees from $15 to $28, lobster dishes at daily market prices and desserts landing at $8. For its dependable menu, skilled kitchen staff, attractive atmosphere, and pleasant service East Bay Grille will earn the Gold Plate. East Bay Grille is located at 173 Water Street in downtown Plymouth, Massachusetts.
