(TV Diner) - The Dancing Pig is just about the classiest barbecue joint we've ever been to. Located in Cumberland, Rhode Island, this new hot spot offers very affordable comfort food in an upscale setting. The formally set tables with white tablecloths stand out against the wine-colored walls. A little bit of barbecue memorabilia on the walls gives you a hint of what's on the all-American menu.
The Roasted Tomato Bisque is a superb soup, garnished with a generous dash of crisp bacon and shredded cheddar cheese for a fabulous combination of flavors. The tasty Pulled Pork Empanadas wrapped in puff pastry almost float off the plate, but the accompanying peach dipping sauce brings them back down to earth.
The oh-so-tender Dancing Pig Ribs are mighty meaty, seasoned with the house rub and then slow-smoked over hardwood for lots of southern flavor. The homestyle Meatloaf is a massive slab of all-natural beef mixed with delicious bacon and mushrooms. On the side for both these dishes, you get very moist cornbread, real old-fashioned baked beans, and macaroni and cheese made with cheddar, bacon and a surprising touch of horseradish.
It won't be easy, but try to save room for dessert. The Chocolate Truffle Cake coated with chocolate ganache (pronounced GUN-ARSH) is not overly sweet and will leave you totally satisfied. The Cheesecake is a real treat - it's deep fried and served with your choice of blueberry or caramel sauce.
This is the kind of restaurant that you want to go back to again and again because there are so many appealing dishes on the menu. For that reason, and for its high quality of food, ample servings, more than fair prices, and super friendly service, we just have to give the Platinum Plate to The Dancing Pig.
Appetizers start at $3.95 and top off at $8.95. Entrees range from $7.95 to $17.95. Desserts are $5.99 each and big enough for two to share.
