Naval personnel at the submarine base in Groton, Connecticut, fired warning shots at a person who was brandishing a knife outside the main gate to the base on Crystal Avenue, a spokesperson said.
One person is in custody, according to the Groton Naval Base spokesperson Chris Zendan. He said he was not sure if the person was trying to access the base or not.
According to Zendan, two Navy civilian police officers were injured by the ricochet of the bullets fired by another Navy civilian police officer who was accosted by the suspect. Both of the injured officers have been taken to a local hospital for treatment; the suspect was not injured, but was taken to a hospital for observation by Groton police.
Groton police and fire officials were called in. Police said pepper spray was deployed.
The investigation is ongoing.
