Early morning fire destroys home in Milton

Fire officials said the frigid weather and excessive clutter made the fire more challenging at the Hillside Street home

Flames poured from a home in Milton, Massachusetts, early Monday morning.

Fire officials say just before 7 a.m., someone going by the Hillside Street home noticed smoke and called 911.

“On arrival, they found heavy fire in the rear of the building, tried to make an interior attack, difficult conditions on the inside, made them go to the outside, hit it defensively,” said Milton Fire Chief Christopher Madden.

The fire chief says there was one person sitting on the front porch of the home when they arrived. They had gotten out on their own.

Crews had some difficulty when they went to clear the rest of the building.

“Excessive clutter, so just difficulty entering from the hallways, the bedrooms and stuff like that, just a lot of personal items,” the fire chief said.

Another obstacle for firefighters was the frigid weather – the water their hoses were pouring on the flames quickly turned to very slick ice.

“The weather always makes it difficult, right, but it makes it slippery for our firefighters, but other than that no issues right now,” Madden said.

Fire officials say that one person who was inside the home at the time of the fire was examined in an ambulance as a precaution.

The cause and origin of this fire remain under investigation.
