Record high temperatures were set in Burlington, Vermont, and Caribou, Maine, on Thursday, continuing what has been a very warm, dry August and early September.
While that combination is very pleasant for most activities, it's not ideal weather for fall foliage.
So far, only low color is being reported in the highest terrain of Vermont, New Hampshire and Western Maine. By this time last year, color was being spotted across most of northern New England.
Sunny days and cool nights are best to draw out the fall color. Drought, or hard frosts and freezes, can severely limit the color.
Temperatures will turn more favorable for color by the second half of the weekend, and especially next week. By then, highs will be in the 60s and 70s with morning lows in the 40s and 50s.
