Panel Probes Drunk Driving Sign

The Maine Ethics Commission is reviewing a complaint about signs that urged Gorham voters not to elect a school committee candidate because of her drunken driving conviction.

The Portland Press Herald reports the issue is whether the signs contained the proper disclosure about who posted them. The signs opposed the election of Suzanne Phillips. Phillips is an outgoing town councilor who ran for school board on Nov. 4 and won. Phillips complained that the signs were "improperly marked," a violation carrying a penalty of up to $200.

Town Councilor Matthew Robinson says he put the signs up. He says he and his attorney and reviewing the complaint.

The signs showed a picture of handcuffs and said: "No Phillips, Arrested for OUI, Convicted of OUI." Phillips' case is from 2012.
