Weekend Fire at Vacant Home Considered Suspicious

Fire crews responded to the blaze off U.S. Route 1 just after 5 p.m. Sunday to find the dilapidated home fully engulfed in flames

Authorities in Brunswick, Maine, have characterized a fire that destroyed a vacant home in a wooded area of the southern Maine town as being suspicious in nature.

The Times Record reports fire crews responded to the blaze off U.S. Route 1 just after 5 p.m. Sunday to find the dilapidated home fully engulfed in flames.

The two-story abandoned structure was already falling into its basement when firefighters arrived at the scene.

Fire Chief Ken Brillant says winds then blew the fire across some power lines, igniting woods and brush surrounding the home. The flames were extinguished and firefighters left the scene by approximately 7:15 p.m.

Brillant says he's unsure who owns the property, which had no power running to the house.

An investigation is ongoing.
