October brought more rain to portions of Massachusetts, but not enough to end the drought.

That was the assessment Thursday from state environmental officials as they issued the latest drought guidance. They say large regions of the state continue to experience below-average rainfall.

A drought warning remains in effect for northeastern, southeastern and central portions of Massachusetts, along with the Connecticut River Valley.

Western Massachusetts overall has also been moved to drought warning level, up from the previous drought watch guidance.

The only region where the level of concern was eased was Cape Cod and the Islands, which is now under a drought advisory rather than a drought watch.

The weekly U.S. Drought Monitor separately reported Thursday that virtually all of Massachusetts was still in moderate to severe drought.
