Voters in Fall River, Massachusetts, have voted for Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter to replace Mayor Will Flanagan after he was recalled.

Voters in Fall River, Massachusetts, have decided to recall Mayor Will Flanagan.

In the historic vote, Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter was voted in to replace him.

Sutter received about 6,000 votes.

Voters could technically have recalled Flanagan and voted him back in - the mayor himself was among the eight candidates on the ballot, placing second with 4,393 votes.

"When we began this process, they said we were crazy, this could never happen, we had an incumbent mayor with a lot of mayor, a lot of power," said Bob Camara of the recall campaign. "The people proved that if you get together and you disturb the government, we can make change."

A mayoral recall election had never happened before in Fall River.

The recall happened after angry tax-payers collected thousands of signatures, unhappy with Mayor Flanagan partly for a "pay as you throw" garbage fee, firefighter layoffs, and allegations that he intimidated a city councilor with a gun during a late night meeting in a car.
