Iconic Boston Restaurant to Shut Its Doors

29 Newbury will close later this month

After more than 30 years in business, Boston's 29 Newbury will shut its doors in mid-April.

"I am absolutely heartbroken to shut my doors after 30 years," said 29 Newbury owner Debbie Lewis. "My biggest concern is for my employees; they have been like family to me and I want them to land safely and successfully after this unexpected closure. I never expected this to happen either and it is not my choice. I plan to provide references for my dedicated staff so they can find new opportunities."

The Back Bay establishment first opened in 1983, and Lewis has owned it since 1986.

The Newbury St. building is owned by D.L. Saunders Real Estate Corp.

A spokesperson for the restaurant refused to elaborate when asked why 29 Newbury is closing.
