Following reports that a data breach at Shaw's and Star Market potentially compromised the credit and debit card data of customers at their combined 78 locations in Massachusetts, the state Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation is offering information for consumers on how to protect their information from identity theft.

AB Acquisition LLC, the parent company of Shaw's and Star Market, has issued some information about the breach on their website.

Those who suspect there has been unauthorized activity on their cards should report it to their bank and credit card companies and obtain a free copy of their credit report from each of the credit bureaus, which can be done by calling: (877) 322-8228 or by visiting this website.

AB Acquisition is reporting that the data breach started June 22, 2014 and ended July 17, 2014.

Businesses that experience a security breach that includes the personal information of Massachusetts residents are required to notify the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation as well as the Attorney General's Office.

Consumers who believe their personal information may have been exposed to misuse should do the following:

Immediately change debit/credit card PINs
Place a fraud alert on your credit report
Monitor your financial accounts for suspicious activity

If there is unexplained activity on your credit report and you believe you are a victim of identity theft you should do the following:

Consider placing a security freeze on your credit reports
