U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire has placed a stone on behalf of President Barack Obama at a memorial in Rindge dedicated to Americans who work on behalf of peace.
In a tradition that dates back to President Truman, presidents have placed a stone at the Altar of the Nation at the Cathedral of the Pines. Shaheen, a Democrat, laid the stone from Pearl Harbor on Monday morning.
Cathedral of the Pines was founded in 1945 by Sibyl and Douglas Sloane III as a memorial to men and women, including their son Sandy, who lost their lives in World War II. The couple envisioned their memorial would attract people of all faiths in a "spirit of unity and respect."
Past presidents and governors have had their tributes to the American war dead placed at the altar.
