The Rhode Island Foundation is giving $2.7 million in grants for several health care programs, including some that aim to improve mental health and encourage primary care providers to work in underserved areas of the state.

The foundation announced the grants on Tuesday as part of an effort to improve the quality and affordability of health care in Rhode Island. It says a loan forgiveness program for primary care providers practicing in medically underserved areas will receive $600,000.

The remaining $2.1 million will be split among five other initiatives that the foundation hopes will encourage collaboration and address public health, social services and behavioral health.

Neil Steinberg, the foundation's president and CEO, says the goal is to test ideas that have the potential to be scaled up.
