A Boston man charged with the slaying 23 years ago of a recent college graduate is being held without bail.

James Witkowski was arraigned Wednesday on a murder charge stemming from the 1992 killing of 21-year-old Lena Bruce, of Philadelphia.

Bruce graduated from Tufts University in May 1992, with a degree in electrical engineering. Two months later, she was found dead in her apartment. Prosecutors say she had been bound with a telephone cord, sexually assaulted, and suffocated.

Investigators charged Witkowski after he was ordered to submit a DNA sample in an unrelated case. Prosecutors say his DNA matched evidence from the crime scene of the Lena Bruce case.

"Bruce's case is one of many older violent crimes in which modern testing brought closure to a once-cold case," says the Suffolk County DA, Daniel Conley.
