34 Miles of Hiking Trails Built From Closed Ski Resort

Though a popular ski resort in eastern Vermont closed five years ago, visitors throughout New England are returning thanks to miles of new trails.

The Valley News reports the western base of Ascutney now features 34 miles of nonmotorized, multi-use recreational trails. The paths are the result of a partnership between West Windsor and a volunteer group that advocates building and maintaining accessible, low-impact trails.

In October, West Windsor voters approved the purchase of 460 acres of former resort land, which permanently conserves about two-thirds of the network.

The area hosts an annual mountain bike race, two footraces and a mountain bike festival, but it could see more now.
