Couple Narrowly Escapes Fire That Destroys Home

A Vermont man says he and his wife were minutes away from being trapped by a fire that quickly spread through their home.

Henry Nowak of Mount Holly tells the Rutland Herald the couple were watching television Monday night when a man started pounding on the front door.

Nowak has difficulty hearing, so he didn't' answer right away. When he opened the door, the passer-by said "Get out! Get out! The garage is all on fire!"

A single wall separated the garage from the living room where the Nowaks were sitting. That wall was burned down and the house was destroyed. The cause is under investigation.

The Nowaks said they didn't smell smoke or see flames.

He said if another two minutes had passed, they would've been stuck inside.
