Defeated Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott Milne says he's going to ask the Vermont Legislature to elect him.
Milne made the announcement Monday at the Statehouse in Montpelier.
He says Vermonters want change.
Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin was the top vote-getter in the Nov. 4 election but he didn't get more than 50 percent of the vote.
Shumlin got 46.4 percent and Milne got 45.1 percent.
The Vermont Constitution says when that happens in elections for governor, lieutenant governor or treasurer, it's up to lawmakers to decide. Historically the losing candidate from the November election concedes the race and the vote in the Legislature is a formality.
The secret-ballot vote of the House and Senate will be held on the Legislature's opening day.
