A former Vermont legislator who was charged with domestic assault has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge under an agreement with prosecutors.
Robert South, of Barre, was accused in May of grabbing the neck of a family member during a dispute at a St. Johnsbury home and was charged with domestic violence.
South was facing up to 18 months in prison if convicted. The Caledonian Record reports he pleaded guilty Thursday to an amended misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct and violating conditions of release. He was ordered to pay $650 in fines and nearly $400 in court surcharges.
South served as a Democrat in the Vermont House of Representatives for six years. He was not re-elected in November 2014.
